2018 Member Convention Speakers

 

Our 2018 Member Convention will feature the following keynote speakers, as well as workshops that will give members the tools to fight for justice at work and in our communities.

Marielena Hincapie

Marielena Hincapie is the executive director of the National Immigration Law Center, the main organization dedicated to defending and advancing the rights of low-income immigrants in the U.S. Ms. Hincapié is highly respected for her legal and political strategies and is seen as a bridge builder within the immigrants’ rights field as well as across broader social justice sectors.

Paul Engler

Paul Engler is a co-founder of the Momentum Training, which in-structs hundreds of activists each year in the principles of effective protest. He is the co-author, along with Mark Engler, of the new book on the craft of mass mobilization, This Is an Uprising: How Nonviolent Revolt Is Shaping the Twenty-First Century.

Bill Fletcher, Jr.

Bill Fletcher, Jr., co-founder of the Center for Labor Renewal, is a columnist and long-time activist. He served as President of Trans-Africa Forum and was formerly the Education Director and later Assistant to the President of the AFL-CIO. He is the author of The Indispensable Ally: Black Workers and the Formation of the Congress of Industrial Relations, 1934-1941.

Michael Tubbs

Michael Tubbs is the first African-American Mayor of Stockton, California, and the youngest mayor in American history of a city of more than 100,000 people. Before being elected Mayor in November 2016, Michael served as the City Councilmember representing Council District 6, the district where he grew up. He is the youngest elected official in Stockton’s history and one of the youngest elected officials in the nation. His work on universal basic income has captured national attention and media coverage.

Mary Kay Henry

Mary Kay Henry is International President of the 2 million-member Service Employees International Union (SEIU), and her leadership is rooted in a deep-seated belief that when individuals join together they can make the impossible possible. Under her leadership, SEIU has won major victories to improve working families’ lives by strengthening and uniting healthcare, property services, and public sector workers with other working people across the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.

Tom Steyer

Tom Steyer is a business leader and philanthropist who believes we have a moral responsibility to give back and help ensure that every family shares the benefits of economic opportunity, education, and a healthy climate. In 2017, he launched Need to Impeach, which has gathered 5.5 million signatures from Americans calling for the impeachment of President Donald Trump. He is also the founder of NextGen an organization that acts politically to prevent climate disaster, promote prosperity, and protect the fundamental rights of every American.
